Hatch Date Feb 10, 2001 Dec 22 update - Jack is thriving in his foster home with training and slowly building trust. He is now pretty friendly to new people, going so far as to solicit head scratches from a visitor. . He seems to be letting his wing/tail feathers grow in too, although still plucking chest feathers Jack was on a diet of nutriberries and avicakes, and his foster mom is working on further expanding his palate and sneaking pellets and fresh food into his diet. So far he enjoys some fresh fruits and freeze dried peas, and will eat oatmeal loaded with herbs, goldenfeast bean supreme (nuts removed), veggies and ground up pellets with whole pellets mixed in. His favorite foods of all are banana chips and nuts. Jack has been a very good boy in his foster home, but he can get defensive if he feels threatened, generally in reaction to toys he doesn’t like or new food (scary objects for a flightless bird). He hasn't actually bitten, only bluffed once or twice, but he did like to clamp down in his prior home. That being said, thus far he soothes quickly with calm speech and slow movements. Jack is a big fan of head scratches and will sometimes exact a toll in exchange for stepping up, but he's also very happy to just hang out on a shoulder or knee. He also has a wide and charming repertoire of beeps, whistles, squeaks, words, and phrases, and loves laughing like a cartoon villain and talking along with people. Jack has lived with other birds for the majority of his life, but he may do best in a home where he can be the center of attention, ideally with a female primary caretaker. He needs an experienced owner due to his plucking and capacity for hormonal/territorial aggression.
