About Sunny and Sweet Pea

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Bird
  • Current Age: 8 Years 4 Months (best estimate)

Sunny (yellow) and Sweet Pea (pale green) are female parakeets of unknown age.  They had lived with a male parakeet for at least two years however he was adopted out separately. The girls were very territorial when the male was present, but have since become more relaxed and social with one another. They are now comfortable with each other and exhibit nurturing behavior (billing) – mainly Sunny to Sweet Pea.

When they are in the same room with foster mom, she leaves the door open for them to come out.  Although they haven’t shown interest in leaving their enclosure, even when millet is used to tempt them.

Morning starts around 6:30AM when their cage is uncovered.   They start their day once the curtains are opened and they can see the outside.  This prompts them to start chattering and checking out the food selection.   They are most comfortable in their cage.  They are nervous when a hand goes into the cage, they won’t step up if a finger is offered inside their cage.   Their wings are clipped. Neither bird has shown any tendency to bite.  They are NEVER covered during the day. Once they are covered for the night (around 8:30-9PM – once TV is off), they are quiet till morning.   A covering is pinned to one corner of cage to offer them a “safe” area in their cage since the cage faces the outside.  They do seem to enjoy looking out and seeing the activity of the outside birds.  They also seem to enjoy the TV, becoming more animated and sometimes very vocal at certain shows – not sure if it’s the voices or the storyline that they are interested in. (we like British detective shows)

Foster mom is working on giving them a more varied diet than just seeds.  They enjoy broccoli , oatmeal, whole grain cereal, leaf lettuce and fruit juice.  I have not seen them eat the carrot, celery, orange, apple, grape which were offered.  There is a bathtub available to them in their enclosure, although I haven’t seen them use it for anything except taking a drink.

They will need to have a patient caregiver who will take the time to work with them on becoming companion pets as currently they are not.   If you enjoy the happy sounds of birds and enjoy their being around, they will make a wonderful addition to a calm household.  If you want ones that will bond to you and sit on your shoulder, patience and training will be required.

Sweet Pea beak meaning does have a condition called Brown Hypertrophy on her cere, which is a normal hormonal condition for female parakeets.  This does not go away and is not contagious to other birds, however, it can be filed down by the vet if it gets too overgrown.  Vets say that it won't cause any issues with her health whatsoever and does not require any special medications or anything.

Both Sunny and Sweet Pea have been disease tested for PBFD and chlamydia.

Sunny and Sweat Pea are currently being fostered in Easton, PA and we require that their forever home be within driving distance – we will not ship our birds. For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Philadelphia area, we have no central location. As our adoptable birds are being foster in our volunteer’s homes only approved applicants can meet our birds.
