Meet Milo. Milo is a 13 year old DNA confirmed male Nanday Conure. This bundle of love and personality has had rough patches in life, but you wouldn't know it by how friendly, cuddly, and accepting of new people he is. Milo lived in a doctor's office for 5 years before going home with a family that kept him alone in the basement for 4 of 5 years, and planned to release him into the wild before his mom caught wind and rescued him. He spent the last 3 years in a good home with dedicated care, annual avian vet visits, and plenty of love, but needs a new home due to a family allergy and work schedules. He has been on a diet of Zupreem Fruitblend and Ecotrition, and readily eats fruit, but never took to chop in his prior home. So far he has accepted some veggies while sitting on a human but ignores them in his cage.

Milo is a cuddle bug who would happily hang out on a human all day--he shows no preference for male or female, any human is great. When it's time for head scratches he head-butts, shoves his head under a hand, or gently nibbles an arm. He is also very patient and understanding as his foster mom helps him with his backlog of pin feathers. Milo also enjoys shoulder time, neck snuggles, shredding tissues and paper (Milo prefers that the human hold it for him), showers in the sink, and sharing meals. He is good about being in his cage and stays very quiet, mostly sunning himself under his avian lamp or playing with his foraging toys.

Milo does need an experienced caretaker, as he was the king of the castle in his former home. This may have contributed to some issues with territorial behavior and aggression towards strangers and people he didn't like (including dive-bombing from his cage). He has shown no territorial behavior in his foster home, but he can be stubborn about leaving his cage top to go back in his cage and above all about leaving shoulders--if he doesn't want to go he will fuss and put his head down or sidle away, and likely bite (sometimes to bluff, but often hard when he doesn't get his way). Showing a safflower seed as a training treat or having another human ask him to step up off a shoulder are good fixes that usually help him stay calm, and we are using them alongside basic clicker training to teach better manners. Milo really is a GOOD bird, he just needs some time, patience, and positive reinforcement.

Milo also waves on command and steps up readily off of other surfaces. He can reportedly say "good bird," and "wow", often says something that sounds like "hello" or "Milo", and also makes kissy noises, laughs, sneezes, coughs, and mumbles very sweet nothings. As a Nanday, Milo can be LOUD, but he's generally pretty quiet other than greetings, calling the first few minutes after he goes back in his cage, and the rare alarm call.

Milo deserves to find his forever home that will show him nothing but love. Given the history of territorial behavior and the biting, Milo should not go to a home with children or a home lacking experience with large conures (or similar-sized and larger parrots). He lived with a cat in his prior home, has been around dogs, and is a-ok with the presence of other birds in the house.

Milo has been disease tested and will be adopted with his cage, toys, disease test results and food to get his forever home started.

Milo is being fostered in Upper Darby, PA, will only be adopted to a forever home within driving distance to his foster home and will require at least two visits before adoption. We do not ship our birds. For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA. As our adoptable birds are living in volunteer homes we only allow approved applicants to meet our birds. If interested in adopting Milo please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org to read our adoption policies and complete an adoption application.
