About Pearl

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Bird
  • General Color: White
  • Current Age: 17 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

Hatch Date: 2006

Pearl is a 15 year old sweet, sweet Goffins Cockatoo. He has been DNA sexed male. His foster mom thought he was a girl and named him Pearl and she still likes it,. He has already been in two homes before her foster home. We are told he spent most of her 15 years in a cage and in a room by himself with little to no interaction. It is remarkable how social, beautiful and sweet he is.

Pearl wants to social with his foster parents, but doesn't seem to know how to do so. He initially would only allow head scratches and would put one foot on a hand. It was as if he had no idea had to step up. He has been in his foster home for a couple of weeks now and is getting much better at stepping and will hang out on his foster mom's lap to watch TV.

He initially was very quiet, but is becoming more vocal each day. Especially when he sees or hears someone in the house, then he does a contact call for attention. He mostly makes sounds like a dog's squeaky toy. Being a cockatoo, he can get loud, but so far hasn't been too bad. Only twice has he screamed, and that was only for a few minutes.

Pearl was on a seed only diet with peanuts for treats. No more peanuts. And his foster mom is working to switch him to pellets. He is starting to eat the pellets and we are hoping to take him off seed mix except for treats.

Since Pearl had never been to a vet before, he was taken in and had bloodwork done. His monocytes and eosinophils were high indicating an infection. He  has been disease tested for PBFD, Chlamydia, Polyoma and Aspergillosis, and tested negative for all.

He will be adopted with his cage, disease test results, blood work results and medical history, toys and food to get his forever home started.

Earl is being fostered in Manalapan, NJ and will only be adopted to a forever home within driving distance, we do not ship our birds. Three visits are required to the foster home before Pearl can be adopted.

For the Love of Birds is a group of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA - we do not have a central location. As Pearl is living in a volunteer's home, we only allow approved applicants to make visits.

If interested in adopting Pearl, please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org to read our adoption policies & procedures and to complete an adoption application.
