Max is an approximately 20-year-old Jardine’s parrot of unknown sex, assumed to be a male.
Sadly, he was surrendered due his original owners having to move to housing that won't allow pets.

Max is a social parrot that loves to make noises and calls, especially in the morning or if he wants attention.

He loves to come out of his cage and play with some toys, eat and wants to be with foster mom.
He is loving and inquisitive.

He can be bitey and is unknown around children.

Max had a health issue when he was a fledgling, and because of it, his tail feathers never developed properly.
His wings do not need to be clipped as he cannot fly.

He does glide to the ground and can hop and walk around quite well.

He is willing to take bit of lift from you to get off the floor, but he’ll tend to walk over to you to get up or crawl up your pant leg.

This is a bird that can NOT get away from other animals in the house (cats and dogs) due the inability to fly away from them.

He should probably be placed in a home without dogs and cats, or in a home that can properly protect him from this type of possible harm.

He should go to a home with an experienced bird owner, he's not a beginner bird.

If you are experienced at reading body language and can pick up on his cues, he's wonderful.

Great personality, fun to listen to and have around.

His foster mom says she thinks the bites are twofold, one is because he doesn't have a tail, so his balance isn't very good.
He'll clamp on to keep from "falling".
The second is that he's set in his ways, so until you figure it out, he gives a warning nip.
We've figured it out, but still need to keep that in the forefront, or come away with a bloody finger - LOL!

He doesn’t know the “up” command when offered a finger.
He prefers to be offered an arm.

He will readily hop on your arm or shoulder, if offered, and hang out with you for a while.

Seems to love head scratches :)

He doesn’t show and aggression or interest in the other birds at foster mom’s house.

Once the lights go out in the room (around 8:30-9PM), he is covered and quiet till morning.

The top of the cage has a tray with toys and some food.
He is content to sit there and make noises or calls.

I would not leave him alone, and he will need supervision when outside of the cage.
Due to their inquisitive nature, parrots can get into trouble with chewing on things that they shouldn’t.
Max is no exception!

Max was brought up on, and still eats, a pelleted diet (Harrison’s bird food Pepper Lifetime Course for med to large birds) which he enjoys.
He also loves fresh fruits and veggies.
Mandarin orange and apple slices, grapes, bananas, nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans), dried cranberries,
grains (rice, cooked potatoes, etc) are his favorites.

He will try different foods offered (he may not always like them though).
He will have a Breton’s sesame cracker for a treat.

He enjoys taking a bath in the sink with the water running slowly over his head.

Max is being fostered in Leonardo, NJ
He will only be adopted to someone that is willing to drive to do the required visits. We will NOT ship our birds. For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster home throughout NJ and Eastern PA, we have no central location. As our adoptable birds are living in volunteer homes, or in their family's home, we only allow approved applicants to meet our birds. If interested in meeting Max, please review our adoption policies and complete an adoption application on our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org.
