About Coconut

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Bird
  • General Color: White

Hatch Date: 2016

Coconut is a female Lovebird, estimated to be about six years old. She was named for the white rings around her eyes that resemble a halved coconut, and for her silly little personality!

She was recently moved to a new foster home, no fault of her own ;)

This is the most recent update on her (below is the previous foster homes write up ):

Coconut is the most incredibly playful bird we have fostered yet.
However, she is slow to warm up to new people.
She does not seem to fear anything, definitely not our dog.
She plays with all of her toys, loves to hide and peek at you, loves her bells, and loves to shred things, especially paper towels and toilet paper rolls.
She does not willingly come out to me yet but once I get her I can get her to sit on my hand for a little bit.
Coconut just needs someone who can put their time in so she can be as people-friendly as she is fun by
herself in her cage.
She has a lot of smiles to offer.
__________________________________________________________________________

She is very bright, curious, clingy, and silly, and she is longing for a new best friend to bond with. As a Lovebird, she wants a lot of one-on-one attention, from the person she can consider her best friend and flock mate. She loves being talked to. Coconut makes a variety of noises, from light chirping to short, shrill calls. Coconut is mildly hand-tame. She can exhibit cage aggression and does best outside of her cage. If she does bite, it tends to be hard.

She loves fresh fruit. She's very curious and will try many different foods, but oranges and apples seem to be her favorite. When it comes to toys, things she can chew, shred, and disassemble are her favorite. She is also a huge fan of swinging on the swings!

Coconut has lain eggs in the past, and steps should be taken to discourage this behavior, as it is very dangerous and can lead to calcium deficiencies and potential egg binding. To be avoided are heat, nesting huts, fuzzy toys, textured rope perches, and textured surfaces she can rub against, as they will encourage her to want to lay eggs. She has not lain eggs in two years now but should be monitored just to be safe, especially in the summer months.

Coconut is being fostered in Morristown, NJ, and will only be adopted out to someone willing to drive for her required visits. We do not ship our adoptable birds. For the Love of Birds is a group of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA - we do not have a central location. As Coconut is living in a volunteer's home we only allow approved applicants to make visits. If interested in adopting Coconut please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org to reach our adoption policies and procedures and to complete an adoption application.
