About Oscar

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Bird
  • General Color: White

Hatch Date: 2011

Oscar is an 11-year-old, male Java Dove.

He’s had a tough life, living most of it in a tiny cage in a darkened room. Now he is in a larger cage and can see the outside and have the sun shine in on him. He is a sweetie that coos on and off all day and sometimes in the early morning when he hears foster mom moving about.

Oscar is a very low-maintenance bird. He is being kept in the main living area, so he can see what is going on and watch TV with his foster family in the evening. He is not yet comfortable being outside of his cage, even though the cage door is open (when a human is around). He will, with coaxing, step up on a hand and come out for small time frames – currently about 15-30 minutes per day.

He shows his displeasure by trying to hit with his wing and trying to nip. Both are ineffectual for the human. He is currently in an adult only, quiet home, and is being interacted with (talking to and being visible for) quite a bit.

His wings are not clipped as he doesn’t seem to have developed chest muscles needed for flight. When he tries to fly, he only gets a few feet off the ground, and goes about 12 inches.

When he is out of his cage, he is placed on a blanket on the floor with some food, water and toys. He eats some of the food but ignores the rest and either stands around or walks over to a place he feels safer – eg. under a chair. Peaceful music is played for him while he’s outside his cage.

Mornings start around 6:30AM with a cleaning of the cage and fresh food. He has seeds, but is particularly fond of Zupreme fruit blend pellets for smaller birds. He also likes the California Blend pellets. Foster mom is working on giving him a more varied diet than just seeds, but so far has shown no interest in the fresh fruit and veggies offered.

During the day he goes to the various levels in his cage and watches what the humans and outside birds are doing. He can be very vocal with his cooing, which is a pleasant sound to hear. Foster mom hasn’t determined what sets off his cooing, if it’s to get attention, or if he’s just content.

He does seem to know his name when called. He does seem to enjoy looking out and seeing the activity of the outside bird and likes to watch TV.

Bed time is around 8:30-9:00 PM and he is covered during the night.

Oscar is a sweet companion bird, but will take some more time and patience to have him be more comfortable with being handled. He’s had a lonely and uncomfortable life and it will take time to gain his trust. If you have the time to engage Oscar, and enjoy the happy sound of bird cooing he will make a wonderful addition to a calm household.

Oscar is being fostered in Easton, PA and will only be adopted to a forever home within driving distance. For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and eastern PA, we have no central location. As our adoptable birds are living in volunteer homes, only approved applicants can make visits. Please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org to read our policies and prcedures and to complete an adoption application.
