About Kiwi

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Bird
  • General Color: Green
  • Color: Green
  • Current Size: 20 Inches
  • Current Age: 21 Years 5 Months (best estimate)
Kiwi is a confirmed male, adult Severe Macaw.  His owners sadly lost their home, and their new housing did not allow pets. They had adopted Kiwi from a shelter about 9 years ago, and are guessing he's probably about 20 years old.

Kiwi will ONLY be adopted to a home with a large bird experience.  He is just settling into his foster home, but he seems to enjoy being in the center of the action.  He is a fairly content bird and enjoys time just sitting on the outside of his cage.  He does have limited flight, but he doesn't try to often.

Kiwi is just learning to play with toys but is exploring different kinds with interest.  He came on a mostly fatty nut diet, so his foster family is trying to convert him to more pellets and offering a wide variety of fresh fruits and veggies.

Kiwi has several words that we've heard so far and he speaks very clearly.  He says "hello", "come here", "step up" "no" "good bird","Kiwi" and he has a great, hardy laugh.  He is a typical Macaw and VERY loud when he vocalizes. For this reason, he will only be adopted by a family living in a single-family home. He doesn't scream often, mostly just to tell you 'it's too late to have the lights on this bright' or he's getting tired, but you'd do best to have a pair of earplugs on hand for these moments.  Kiwi is new to being covered at night, but he seems to like the dark cover and sleeps the whole night quietly.

Kiwi is starting to step up with more regularity, but his foster family is trying to work with him away from his cage a little, as he tends to nip to tell you, "I'm not in the mood to step up right now". He has just begun accepting head scritches, on his terms, of course.

Kiwi will HAVE to be supervised at all times around other animals. He is not a good flyer and will NOT be able to get away from a threat. That is why supervision is critical.

Kiwi is being fostered in Howell, NJ, and will only be adopted to a forever home within driving distance.
We will NOT ship our birds.
For the Love of Birds is a group of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA - we do not have a central location.  Kiwi is living in a volunteer's private home; we only allow approved applicants to make visits.
If interested in adopting Kiwi, please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org to read our adoption policies & procedures and to complete an adoption application.
