Meet Peanut, an 18-year-old Bronze Winged Pionus, sex not known but to date, Peanut hasn’t laid eggs. Peanut spent many years sharing a cage with a cockatiel and was kept covered most of the day and night. He’s now in his own place which doesn’t get covered at any time, not even at night, which he likes. Peanut does share the room (not his cage) with other foster birds – something else he seems okay with. Peanut’s house is left open for him regularly. He mainly likes to hang in or on top, and he is perfectly fine if you are in close proximity, but if you point a finger at him or crinkle the newspapers when you’re changing them, he gets frightened and will fly off He’s a good flyer but tires after a few minutes. Then he’ll just waddle away from you until he’s ready to “step up” onto your forearm (again – no fingers please!) to be taken back home. Peanut hasn’t said much since being in his new surroundings; however, he’s occasionally chimed in when his roommates are chirping away, and he’s even said “HELLO!” once or twice so far – at least that’s what foster parents think he’s saying. When something happens he doesn’t like, he’ll let out a kind-of screech to express his displeasure, but then it’s back to being quiet. Peanut’s foster mom is experimenting with various fresh fruits and veggies to supplement the healthy Harrison’s pellet formula he’s accustomed to. So far he likes apples and he’ll try the day’s CHOP, favoring carrots over the other veggies, and kinds of pasta seem to be okay too. Peanut, like his namesake, likes peanuts and walnuts (the only 2 tried so far) but gets them only as a rare treat. If interested in meeting Peanut, he’s currently being cared for in Manahawkin, NJ.
