About Rex and Max

  • Status: Available for Adoption (adoption info)
  • Species: Bird
  • Current Age: 3 Years 8 Months (best estimate)

Hatch Date: 2020

This colorful dio are Gouldian (Rainbow) Finches. Rex has an orange head and Max has a red head. Both are male.

The boys had been part of a trio, but sadly Sonny, the female, recently passed away.

Some interesting information about their species. They are natives of Australia, Gouldian finches are entertaining and beautiful birds. They are 6 different colors!  They are “watch only” birds and do not like to be handled.   They are tiny – about 5” and weigh about ½ ounce. Their species is the inspiration for the ViewSonics corporate logo.

They grew up together and should remain a pair, as these finches are very social birds.    Max and Rex spend their day flying around their large flight cage, eating and chasing one another.  They have a very soft, squeaky cheeping song and are a delight to look at and listen to.

As is common for their species, they are birds to be admired, rather than trained as human companions (handling, sitting on shoulders, etc).

These are not birds for the beginner bird owner due to their special feeding and bathing needs.  These birds are a bit high maintenance and require a routine for their eating, drinking and bathing.   They have S76, iodine, vitamins and calcium supplements added to their drinking water, food and bath waters and given at specific days.  These supplements are to prevent air sac mites and breathing issues as Gouldian Finches are prone to air-sac mite infections, especially when stressed.  All supplements will be supplied with instructions to the adoptive family.

They can be easily stressed, and require being in a room with the temperature between 70F and 80F since they are susceptible to cold.   Their cage is covered for bed time.

Their cage is rather large (35” wide/22” deep/ 62”tall) due to their need to fly around for exercise. If you are interested in adopting them, you must have room for this cage and be able to transport it.  They would not do well in a small cage.

Rex and Max are being fostered in Manalapan, NJ and will require an in-person visits before adoption; we do not ship our adoptable birds.

For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA.
As our adoptable birds are living in volunteer homes, we only allow approved adopters to make the required visits.

If interested in adopting Rex and Max, please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org and read our adoption policies, fees and to complete an adoption application.
