About Kai'ani

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Bird
  • General Color: Green
  • Current Age: 29 Years 5 Months (best estimate)

Hatch Date: 1994

Kai'Ani, who goes by Kai, is a DNA sexed male Double yellow-headed Amazon. Kai is 29 years old.

Kai has lived with one family his entire life, but due to life changes, his human dad could no longer keep him.

Kai is a joy to have around. He is sweet, talkative, and well-behaved. Kai loves time out of his cage and mostly will stay on his cage's drop-down ledge or climb on top of his cage. He loved hanging out and being with his dad and is slowly, and on his terms, will step up and accept head scratches from his foster mom. At first, he was fearful of playstands, but now will hang out on them.

Kai doesn't fly around but rather prefers to climb down his cage. He has only done this a few times in his foster home to visit his foster mom when she was sitting on the couch by his cage.

Kai gets very excited and very vocal when other birds are flying around the living room where his cage is located. Kai has shown no aggression to other birds in his foster home. He would probably enjoy living in a home with other birds.

When his foster mom or dad first walk into the living, Kai says hello. They say hello. He says hello. Foster mom thinks he is playing a game to see how many times he can get her to say hello back.

Kai says hello, hi Kai, poppa, and momma. When Aria, a white pigeon, flies into the living room, Kai gets very excited and calls out what sounds like white boy.

Kai has been disease tested and had a physical exam and blood work done at the vet. He is very healthy, albeit a little overweight. Kai was on a seed mix diet but has transitioned to a pellet mix now.

Kai has plucked feathers on his upper back, legs and chest. The vet thinks it was anxiety-driven. Kai didn't have shreddable toys in his cage in his previous home, but has several different types in his foster home. After only a few days he started playing with them. He has already chewed his way through several toys. Hopefully, that is keeping his beak and mind busy and stops his plucking habit.

His foster mom will put on YouTube music videos or movies for him during the day. He does seem to be watching the TV at times and enjoying the entertainment.

Kai is being fostered in Manalapan, NJ, and will require three in-person visits before adoption; we do not ship our adoptable birds.

For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA. As our adoptable birds are living in volunteer homes, we only allow approved adopters to make the required visits.

If interested in adopting Kai, please visit our website ftlob.rescuegroups.org and read our adoption policies, fees and to complete an adoption application.
