About Dusty

  • Status: Available for Adoption (adoption info)
  • Species: Bird
  • General Color: Gray
  • Current Age: 13 Years (best estimate)
Hatch Date: 2012

Dusty is a 12-year-old confirmed male Congo African Grey who  has been in our care for many months now due to a highly suspected neurological issue that requires medication twice daily.
Potential adopters will need to confidently administer his medication which will require practice and patience.

Upon examination and testing through our trusted veterinary professionals, it is believed that Dusty exhibits a neurological 'tick' that causes fast, and at times excessive head shaking and/or twitching.
Dusty has also had episodes of falling from his perch which presented itself similar to seizure activity.
These episodes are largely infrequent now, in fact, close to non-existent but his head tick remains.

Dusty is SO much more than a special needs status.  Seriously - just look at this handsome guy.
His foster mom describes him as extremely intelligent, flirtatious, jovial, and very receptive to learning new things.  Dusty's ability to mimic is astonishing and he has also proven to have his own personal music vault stored in memory.  Music is everything to this guy.  Dusty can and would spend the day in front of Alexa if he could, singing "Hi- Ho" and "Oh Yeah" to name a few .

It is important to note that Dusty is incredibly headstrong, and can be especially stubborn if asked to do something that he is simply unwilling to do ( step up, etc .) These are the times to respect his boundaries.
Dusty is making huge strides with understanding that " no biting" means just that. There must be a mutual respect between both Dusty and the adopter as he will test the limits and routine, gentle corrections will set him up for complete success.

Out of cage time is a must, and with that comes strong curiosity that will lead Dusty to trouble.
Supervision is mandatory.

Dusty is guarded while both in and on his cage. He does protest being put in if his foster mom goes out, or when it is time for bed- this leads him to try to bite out of frustration and a last attempt to have things his way- Again, Dusty is making very nice progress with the "no biting" prompt.

Currently on a clean, healthy diet of quality nuts & seeds that also includes pellets. Apples and carrots are #1 in his book.

Dusty is a loving and endearing chatterbox who is a pure joy to share life with- guaranteed.

*Medication administration will be shown many times to ensure all parties are both comfortable and able to follow through for the future well-being of Dusty*

Dusty is being fostered in Howell, NJ,  and will only be adopted to a forever home within driving distance.  We will NOT ship our birds.

For the Love of Birds is a group of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA -
We do not have a central location.  Dusty is living in a volunteer's private home; we only allow approved applicants to make visits.
