Conure : : Male : : Senior : : Medium
Hatch Date: 1995 approximately
Dougie is a gem of a Sun Conure. He is an amazing old boy, somewhere between 27 and 32 years old, but he doesn't know it!
He loves to hang from one leg from the top and sides of his cage and to say "Hi Dougie!" while flapping his wings to greet whoever enters his room. He whistles and makes several very cute noises, in addition to the standard sun conure screaming, of course.
Sun conures are particularly loud, and he is no exception. He is sweet and affectionate with all three members of his foster family and their guests. He is working on flying, and can finally gain a bit of height, but seems to have a bit of arthritis in one of his wings.
He loves to snuggle on the shoulder of either foster parent while they do work, and naps there. Likely due to his age, he does nap a lot, and would do great with someone who would like a cuddle buddy to snuggle against their neck.
Some important things to know about Dougie: If he were king, there would be one food group and it would be sunflower seeds. They are his ultimate treat, and the way to his heart. Chopped apple is a close second, and a good bit healthier.
He also is missing one of his hind toes, which he lost in an accident years ago, so he struggles to balance at times, especially on narrow wooden perches. Because of that, he has primarily rope perches in his cage, as well as platforms. Dougie is curious and sweet with other birds. He has not shown aggression since being introduced to the foster family’s other birds.
He loves to eat with the family, but wants whatever the family is eating as much as he wants his own food, which requires a careful eye, since he's quick to try to snatch whatever he can. He quickly adapted from a seed diet to a diet that is half pellet and half homemade chop mix. Sunflower seeds continue to be his treat food, and what is used in any training sessions.
Dougie may not have decades ahead of him, but he will be a darling companion to whomever is lucky enough to adopt him.
Dougie is being fostered in Cherry Hill, NJ, and will only be adopted to a forever home within driving distance.
