Sweet Sammy is a male cockatiel who is estimated to be at least 10 years old, according to the mother of his former owner.
Tragically, his owner passed away after a long time in the hospital.
During that time, her parents came by to give Sammy food and water, but he wasn’t very warm toward them.
He was mostly on his own for the better part of two months.
We think losing his mom hit him hard
It took him a few days in his foster home to allow any interaction at all.
He did warm up, and now he is a little shoulder shark.
He wants nothing more than to ride around cuddled against someone’s neck.
He is mild-mannered, snuggly, and loves scritches.
He’s more of a teddy bear than a class clown.

He will nip at your ears if he isn’t getting scritches when he wants them, but that can be worked on- and it is so light that it’s just for attention.
He is still a bit skittish and requires gentle talking and slow movements when having him step up.
We are guessing that may be because he was isolated for a bit.
He’s an excellent chop eater but is still getting seeds mixed in
At present, he doesn’t seem to eat his pellets, and while he’s gaining some needed weight.
He was underweight when he came to us and is still just shy of his goal weight.

He vocalizes in pretty ways.
He roamed free 24/7 in his former home, but seems fine with being in his cage when his foster family isn’t home
or able to supervise him, and fine in the cage at night time.
Sammy interacts well with both parents and the child in his foster family. He will make a wonderful cuddle buddy for the right family.

Sammy has been disease-tested for chlamydia and PBFD (beak and feather disease)

Sammy is being fostered in Cherry Hill, NJ.
He will require in-person visits before adoption.
We do not ship our birds.
For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes throughout NJ and Eastern PA.
As our adoptable birds are living in private volunteer homes, we only allow approved adopters to make the required visits.
