Charlie

Charlie is a very personable, very beautiful, 14-year-old male Hoffman Conure (a rare species!).

He truly loves the people he loves, and chatters up a storm in his cage or calls out, as soon as he sees them or hears their voices.  He has sooo much personality and is truly a large bird in a small bird's body.

Charlie has a respiratory condition and x-rays show white areas on his lungs. He is on three oral medications, one med is twice a day. His condition is currently stable. He will be on these medications for the rest of his life. He is easily toweled and takes them very easily. He goes to the vet every six months for bloodwork, and will also get x-rays if indicated. He must be closely watched for any signs of respiratory difficulties and may require more frequent vet visits in the future.

He is fully flighted and opts to fly away from situations he does not like or if spooked.
Charlie has learned several behaviors such as kiss, recall, perching, go home,
target and spin.

He loves nuts but has recently turned away from sunflower seeds. He loves his food and eats most fruits and veggies, with apples and blueberries being his favorite.

As with most birds, he will take a little time to form a relationship with a new person and build trust.  Charlie is a very good and loving bird, but he may “play favorites” in his new family.  He does not step up on your hand very well, so it is best to stick-perch him and he will walk on to your hand from the perch. He has bitten people that have tried hand-perching him.

He is a true shoulder or head bird and can hang there all day. Once he is settled, he does like his head scratched, his feathers preened, and he will snuggle into you for some love. He also likes flying to and hanging out on your head.

Charlie does not speak, but he can be noisy in the morning. Overall, he is a very quiet bird and enjoys hanging out with the other foster birds in the house (not in the same cage/space).

He puts himself to bed in his hammock, once the sun goes down and usually does not like being disturbed (he needs his beauty rest).

In his two previous homes before coming into foster care, he developed a strong attachment to one individual with whom he was very sweet and affectionate, but acted aggressively toward other family members.  For this reason, Charlie would be a fantastic bird for a single person who can develop a strong bond with him or for a family or couple that is willing to be patient and work on intentional socialization and training.

We do consider him to be a SPECIAL NEEDS bird, as he has a chronic medical condition that will require lifelong treatment. He will only be adopted out to someone who is committed to, and capable of continuing his medical care.

Charlie is currently being fostered in Howell, NJ, and will only be adopted to a forever home within driving distance.  Charlie will require at least three visits to the foster home prior to adoption.  We do not ship our birds.

For the Love of Birds is a network of dedicated foster homes across NJ and Philadelphia and only approved applicants are allowed to make visits to our adoptable birds.

If you are interested in adopting Charlie, complete an application on our website at ftlob.rescuegroups.org
