Thank you for your interest in adopting a bird. There are many birds who are in need of a new home, through no fault of their own, and we appreciate your desire to provide a loving home to one of these birds. We are committed to finding the right home for every bird, and to providing you with support and information to create the best match possible. This is why we ask you to provide information on this application.

By submitting this application we consider you to have read and understand our adoption policies/procedures and are seriously interested in adopting a bird from For the Love of Birds, if approved. Please appreciate that For the Love of Birds is a 100% volunteer, foster and donation based rescue and we will begin processing your application as soon as possible. Matching the right bird to your situation requires patience on both the adopter and volunteer’s part. If anything changes during the application process kindly advise the rescue accordingly. We will work diligently to find the bird who will best fit your circumstances we simply request your patience and cooperation. Thank you for opting to adopt!

For the Love of Birds reserves the right to refuse adoptions to any potential adopter(s). We approve an application based on the applicant’s ability to provide a loving home to one of our birds.  We work with the applicant to determine the appropriate species and bird for their family dynamics, experience and expectations.

Our Adoption Process:

1. Read and understand adoption policies/procedure (listed under Adoption Info tab on website)
2. Complete application.
3. You will be notified via email that we received your application. Kindly reply back to that email for acknowledgement.
4. We will check your personal and veterinary references and check with your landlord if you rent your house/apartment. This step must be completed before proceeding to the next step.
5. Telephone interview to review your application to determine which species and specific bird personality best matches your experience, family dynamics and expectations.
6. Home visit, Facetime or video of your home.
7. Potential adopter completes the required amount of in person visits the bird of interest at the foster home. Multiple visits are required for medium to large size birds; more information is listed on our Adoption Info tab. Bird’s foster home location is listed in its bio. During these visits you will learn more about the bird’s behavior and husbandry needs, have hands on time with the bird and ability to ask the foster parent questions about this bird or bird care, nutrition, behavior in general.

Are you aware that parrots require a great deal of activity, socialization, enrichment, care and maintenance, and that it can be costly to provide the bird with a proper diet, veterinary care and housing? *

Are you aware that your bird may develop habits that include destruction of furniture, doors, woodwork, draperies, clothing, biting, screaming for attention, fear of certain family member or strangers, may be messy and fling their food, and that these behaviors require your time, patience and positive reinforcement training to correct?*

Are you aware that most parrots have the capability to talk, but not all will? Some birds scream, loudly and continuously. This may be due to a need for attention or medical care*

Are you willing to spend hands on time interacting with a bird you like under the supervision of the foster parent? Note that foster homes are located throughout New Jersey. Three or more visits are required for medium to large parrots. *

Please be advised that For the Love of Birds cannot guarantee the health of any bird, even with the best veterinary care and disease testing. We will provide the adoptable bird’s disease test results and any medical records to you prior to the adoption finalization. I have read and agree to these terms and conditions. *

There is an adoption fee for each bird. This fee is non-refundable and helps to cover a portion of the cost of the bird’s care while they are with us (food, toys, veterinary care, etc) and varies on the species, age, and our determined adoptability of the bird. Each bird will be adopted out with a cage, toys and some food.
