Cockatiel : : Female : : Young : : Small
Luna and Tulip came into our rescue as part of the SPCA removal of over 200 birds in the hoarding situation in Passaic last month. We have taken in 13 cockatiels from the hoarding situation who are all quite young and have their entire lives ahead of them to be in loving and attentive homes.
Luna and Tulip are beautiful Lutino cockatiels. It is difficult to sex young Lutinos as males and females can have the same markings. We believe both are females. They have been examined by an avian vet and have been disease tested for psittacosis, PBFD, chlamydia, Pacheco's and aspergillosis. They tested negative for all of these diseases. Luna is the littlest, and was 25% lighter than the other cockatiels. Luna's right leg and foot are deformed, which the vet believes was congenital. She doesn't let this slow her down and she climbs around the cage using her left leg and beak. Her foster mom planned to keep Luna in a dedicated cage set up to accommodate her deformity, but she would not hear of it. As shown in the photo of Luna and Tulip, as soon as Luna's cage was opened, she ran over to be with Tulip.
Tulip is a good flyer and enjoys the freedom of flight. And the good exercise. She should be kept flighted. The girls are very sweet and Tulip will step up if not on her cage. Luna is more hesitant. The girls are not nippy. These girls had a difficult start in life, but are resilient and are ready to go to their forever home where they can have their own family.
The girls are being fostered in Hamilton, NJ Other Pictures of Luna and Tulip (click to see larger version):
