Ulysses - 2/19/2011) Meet Merlin and Ulysses - Merlin is an 8 1/2-year old male grey and white cockatiel and Ulysses is an 8-year old male cockatiel who are completely bonded to one another. They need to be in constant proximity or otherwise will cry out very loudly until reunited. Currently they seem to be somewhat wary of their foster mom and temp home, but have shown signs of becoming more comfortable.
The birds have been on a diet of Kaytee pellets supplemented with seed mix and millet; they also get treats of crackers (no salt) , bread, veggies, and apple. They like to be misted with a water bottle and they're first mom says they will go into the shower with their human. I have also been told they like to perch on their humans' shoulders and respond to "step-up," especially when one is not near the other.
Merlin and Ulysses are strong flyers; therefore, for safety reasons, their wings are clipped. They like being out of their cage and will usually start by hanging on top, but soon will "fly" to the floor and promptly begin exploring every inch of their surroundings. Since they are clipped, when it's time to return home, they have a ladder to climb up and back in. Once out, however, it might be a challenge to return them to their home...offering them a treat while calling out "where are the birdies" while walking to their cage helps. Do not allow them to hang in or under dark, tight spaces for too long as this tends to make them territorial. When they're under "lock-down" too long, they get chirpy until let out; if this isn't possible, covering their cage will quiet them down. They also prefer to be covered for bedtime.
Merlin and Ulysses don't seem to care either way about my Green-Cheek Conure or my 70 lb. American Bulldog. I'm told they are wary of small children, but will do alright as long as they have their space to return to.
